Summertime in San Diego is my absolute favorite time of the year! Warm weather, cool water, and relaxed days are how we spend most of our time during the months of July and August. Summer is also my favorite time to photograph families on the beach (although anytime of the year in San Diego is good for beach sessions!). The number one question I get asked by clients once they book their family photos, is what should we wear? This can be a daunting task for some people, especially if you have a large family or have booked an extended family session. I'm here to make the task of deciding what to wear for your summer family photos, much easier!
What To Wear for Your Summer Family Photos
Deciding what to where to your family session can feel overwhelming for many people. Should we all wear the same color? Do we dress up or dress down? Wear heels or go barefoot? When it comes to choosing your wardrobe for family photos, I like to think of 3 things: comfortable, casual, and coordinated.
If you've spent anytime scrolling through my social media or looking around my website, you know that I LOVE movement in my images! I ask families to play games together, dads to throw kiddos up in the air, mamas to snuggle their babies, and kids to run, jump, and get their energy out. Comfortable loose-fitting clothing lends well to the relaxed and laid-back sessions I offer.
Like I've said before, my sessions are laid-back and fun and the images I capture focus on emotions and connection. The primary thing I want you to see when you look at your images, is the love and affection you have for each other as a family. With that being said, graphic T's and wrinkly shirts will distract from that so while I do advocate for a more casual look, there are plenty of ways to be casual while put together. For dads, I love a collared polo or button-down shirt with the sleeves rolled up. For mamas, flowy dresses, long skirts, or rompers look elegant yet casual. For your kiddos, think picture day at school. Cotton dresses, rompers, khaki shorts, or plain t's are comfortable enough for kids to move in but capture nicely on camera.
I always tell my clients to focus on coordinating with each other, rather than matching. If everyone shows up in a different shade of blue, that will be what your eye is attracted to when you look at your photos. For summer family photos I love muted soft colors such as blues, blush, beige, and white. These colors look beautiful paired together wether you are at the beach or on a trail. Patterns and prints can add texture and layers to your wardrobe, but I recommend only one or two at most wear a print while the rest of the family wears solids.
Finally, it's important to remember that your family photos are meant to capture YOUR family. Keep the above 3 things in mind and choose pieces that are true to who you are and the style you love.
